Tsuyama Castle was completed in 1616 by Mori Tadamasa, lord of the Tsuyama domain, after 12 years of construction. Its buildings were torn down in the Meiji era, but the maze-like paths and towering stone walls remain, and the Bitchu Yagura, once the largest turret in the castle, was rebuilt in 2005. It is listed among Japan’s 100 Fine Castles.

Each autumn the castle grounds, now Kakuzan Park, hold a momiji (autumn leaves) festival, when maples color the grounds around the stone walls. Alongside evening illumination there are ikebana (flower arrangement) displays, stage shows and food events.

In 2026 the festival runs from Saturday, November 14, to Monday, November 23 (a national holiday), with illumination from 5 to 9 p.m. Tsuyama is in northern Okayama Prefecture and can be reached by train from Okayama Station. Leaf color varies from year to year, so check local updates before you go.
