Kunen-an is a villa and garden built in the Meiji era by the Saga businessman Itami Bun’emon and his son Yataro. It is the only garden in Saga Prefecture designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty, and it is normally closed to the public.

The garden is known for its maples and moss, set around a sukiya-style house (a refined, teahouse-influenced style of architecture) that blends into the wooded hills behind it. It opens for a short period in autumn, timed for the maple colors.

In 2026 the autumn opening runs for 16 days, from Saturday, November 14, to Sunday, November 29. Kanzaki is on the JR Nagasaki Line between Saga and Tosu, so it can be combined with a trip to Saga or Fukuoka. Check Saga Prefecture’s page for opening hours and entry details before you go.

Dates and details may change or the event may be cancelled. Always check official information before you go. Information checked: 2026.11.02
