Kencha-sai Tea Offering at Kitano Tenmangu

The Kencha-sai recalls the Grand Kitano Tea Gathering that Toyotomi Hideyoshi held at this shrine. Each year one of the heads of four tea schools and two other masters, in rotation, performs the tea offering before the deity.

On the day, additional tea rooms are set up in the shrine’s tea houses and office, and at the nearby Kamishichiken Kaburenjo theatre.
